WOMEN ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN FOOD SECURITY AND SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA: CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS
The paper highlighted how Nigeria's overdependence on crude oil exploration has diverted her attention from her once booming agricultural based economy. This situation has had adverse consequences on her food security and agricultural development. The paper, therefore, examined various government programmes aimed at revamping her agricultural sector. It was, however, noted that the rural women who play vital roles in agricultural production have not directly and sufficiently benefitted from these programmes. They are still faced with such challenges as high level of poverty, low level of education, unfavourable cultural land practices, lack of agricultural input to mention but a few. The writers believe that the rural women would be better positioned to actively participate in food security and sustainable agricultural development if the government implements the strategies suggested in this paper.
